Mata Hari is a hybrid opera-theatre piece inspired by the legendary and controversial female mystic dancer, who was executed for espionage during World War One. Created by stage-director/librettist Paul Peers, composer Matt Marks and theatre artist Tina Mitchell, this original work pushes the operatic form through the use of physical theater, unconventional instrumentation, translations of historical documents, and highly manipulated video design. Set during the final months of her life in prison in Paris, the piece pits a single female against the five men who loved and loathed her and ultimately destroyed her. Mata Hari is being developed at the HERE Arts Center in New York City and will be a part of PROTOTYPE Festival in January 2017.
